Anyway, Bras Basah complex has all the coolest and most retarded stuffs there. Now i know where to get all the really good and cheap art and craft materials from. There are even shops where you can sell your old story books or rent some super old books that you cant find in the library.
But the highlight of the trip to Bras Basah wasnt the Bras Basah Complex, it was the Lee Kong Chian reference Library at the National library of Singapore. There are security checks before you enter the library and you cant bring in your bags. But it is really impressive once you enter. It's one of the ideal library collection ever with tonnes of shelves and super quiet environment. I think that would be one of the most condusice studying environment, you cant even talk and no annoying kids playing catching.
Anyhow my mission there was to retrieve certain lost newspaper articles for my project work. You have to go through their collection of Mircoflims to retrieve whatever newspaper of the certain date. Not only do they have the straits times from way way back before singapore's independance, they have other newspapers from other asian countries.
Once you selected your microfilm of that date you want, you go to this dark room where you use this machine to view the Microflim. Basically, its a projector which projects out the image of the flim kind of something like how they use to project out movie flims in the cinema. It can be quite a headache when you are scroll through all the articles.
After gathering all the pages of the newspaper for the articles, you go to their photocopying room where they help you search the page you want to print and they will basically print the newpaper article out for you. But it is very costly, 60 cents per piece of A4 article- nearly the price it takes to buy the one set of newspaper.
